Young Ag Champions Earn Top Honours

Saskatchewan has honoured four outstanding students for their dedication to agriculture with the Agriculture Student Scholarship. These scholarships support post-secondary students who demonstrate a strong passion for agriculture and advocate for industry’s future.

This year’s grand prize of $6,000 was awarded to Abbey Norek. Her winning video highlighted the disconnect between urban and rural communities regarding farming.

Abbey proposed that education and advocacy are key to bridging this gap. She also shared her personal efforts, such as building a school garden using recycled materials, leading farm outreach programs, and lobbying for agriculture electives in her school division.

“What it really comes down to is education and spreading awareness about what farming is really like so more people can build trust in it. Hopefully more young people want to come into this amazing industry” said Abbey Norek, grand prize winner, Agriculture Student Scholarship.

Three more students were also awarded $3,000 scholarships:

  • Noah Skoropad from Chamberlin
  • Rebecca Mayerle from Tisdale, and
  • Ty Annand from Nipawin

All recipients will attend the University of Saskatchewan’s College of Agriculture and Bioresources in the fall to pursue Bachelor of Science in Agriculture degrees.

“It’s encouraging to see such passionate and knowledgeable youth in this year’s Agriculture Student Scholarship submissions. Saskatchewan producers are generational leaders when it comes to innovation and sustainability, and that’s why we continue to invest in the education of our future industry leaders. Congratulations to this year’s recipients” said Daryl Harrison, Saskatchewan Minister of Agriculture.

These scholarships not only recognize academic excellence but also celebrate students who are actively shaping the future of agriculture through hands-on work and community involvement.

Residue Management

Video: Residue Management

Residue Management conservation practice manages the amount, orientation, and distribution of crop and other plant residue on the soil surface year-round while limiting soil-disturbing activities used to grow and harvest crops in systems where the field surface is tilled prior to planting. This video explores how Ryan McKenzie implemented this conservation practice on his farm in Samson, Alabama.

Practice benefits:

• Increases organic matter

• Improves air quality

• Decreases energy costs

• Reduces erosion

• Improves soil health

The Conservation at Work video series was created to increase producer awareness of common conservation practices and was filmed at various locations throughout the country. Because conservation plans are specific to the unique resource needs on each farm and also soil type, weather conditions, etc., these videos were designed to serve as a general guide to the benefits of soil and water conservation and landowners should contact their local USDA office for individual consultation.
