Urgent USDA Measures Requested for Poultry Crisis

As the avian flu crisis escalates, a bipartisan group of senators, led by Amy Klobuchar and Joni Ernst, is turning up the heat on the USDA, demanding swift action to protect farmers, food supplies, and the nation’s agricultural economy.

This significant health crisis has necessitated the depopulation of millions of birds and now poses risks to farm workers.

The senators' letter to Secretary Brooke Rollins calls for an aggressive response, including the development and stockpiling of vaccines, and practical advancements in vaccine delivery. The ongoing devastation wrought by the avian flu underscores the urgency of their appeal.

Key initiatives suggested include the HPAI Strategic Initiative, which would foster collaboration among industry leaders, university experts, and government bodies to innovate in the areas of disease prevention, detection, and control. They also advocate for strict animal movement controls and robust support for states implementing the USDA’s National Milk Testing Strategy.

The letter also addresses the need to ensure that international trade remains unaffected. The senators have highlighted the importance of engaging with international trading partners to maintain trade flows according to global standards, crucial for the U.S. agricultural economy.

Through this bipartisan effort, the senators aim to reinforce the agricultural sector's resilience against avian influenza, ensuring both the safety of the U.S. food supply and the well-being of those involved in its production.
