Alberta Local Food Week: Minister Sigurdson

"Alberta is known around the world for producing premium-quality, great-tasting food with the highest standards of food safety, animal care, biosecurity and environmental stewardship. Whether it’s fresh produce, craft beer and cider or our world-renowned Alberta beef, Alberta’s agriculture producers provide our province, country and world with nutritious food every single day. Every August, farms, ranches and ag-tourism operators across the province invite Albertans to experience Alberta Local Food Week and Open Farm Days.

“Over the next week, Albertans will have the opportunity to meet the hard-working farmers and entrepreneurs that put nutritious food on our plates. Whether you’re picking fresh fruits and vegetables at a u-pick farm, buying locally grown products, or taking part in activities to learn about where our food comes from, there are many ways to support your local food producers throughout the week.

“I encourage you to visit a farmers’ market near you. While you’re there, look out for products with the “Made in Alberta” label, which identifies foods grown or processed right here in Alberta.

“The week wraps up with Open Farm Days on August 17 and 18. With about 170 host farms across the province opening their doors to offer open houses, great local food experiences, tours and an opportunity to buy Alberta-grown and produced products, visitors will see how their food is made and learn about the people who produce it.

“Many Open Farm Days hosts have also organized culinary experiences featuring some of the finest chefs in rural Alberta. These farm-to-table experiences are a unique way to enjoy fresh, homegrown dishes while supporting the livelihoods of local ag operators.

“I encourage you to participate in some of the many activities happening this week and enjoy some delicious Alberta-made food and beverages. Have a great Local Food Week!”

Before trade and tariffs dominated the conversation, taxation was one of the biggest issues on farmers’ minds last year. From the carbon tax to capital gains, OFA worked with the Canadian Federation of Agriculture and provincial partners to push for fair, practical solutions. We saw progress on carbon tax relief and capital gains, and we continue to advocate for modernized farm tax programs at both the provincial and federal levels.

OFA works to represent the interests of Ontario farmers to all levels of government. Renew your Farm Business Registration (FBR) by March 1/26 and choose OFA so we can continue to support Ontario farmers and their businesses.
