Alberta’s Farming Future Gets a $3.2M Shot in the Arm

In a move aimed at strengthening Alberta’s agricultural research and competitiveness, the provincial government has announced a one-time grant of $3.2 million for 12 applied research associations across the province.

The funding will be used to upgrade essential equipment, infrastructure, and facilities, enabling these organizations to continue their work supporting farmers and ranchers with practical, science-based solutions. Applied research associations serve as a crucial bridge between scientific innovation and on-the-ground farming practices, offering extension services, conducting trials, and developing techniques to improve crop and soil quality, manage pests, and promote environmental sustainability.

“Our government is committed to free and unbiased research,” said RJ Sigurdson, Alberta’s Minister of Agriculture and Irrigation. “Applied research associations play a vital role in supporting farmers and ranchers with top-notch research that helps improve and advance agriculture. This funding helps ensure associations can concentrate on providing research and extension to help our producers adopt new technologies and practices and improve their competitiveness. Now the associations can address their most pressing capital equipment issues.”

The investment is expected to extend the lifespan of existing facilities, improve the quality of applied research and outreach activities, reduce operational costs, and address health and safety concerns.
