Benton FFA builds on strengths

The Benton Community High School FFA keeps improving to build on their success.

This year started with revamped classes, said advisor Krystal Wright, who is in her 19th year leading the program.

“I wanted to broaden kids’ options,” Wright said.

The new courses include processing of raw products and natural resources and turf and landscaping.

About 200 students in seventh through 12th grade are members of the Benton chapter.

The work they do prepares them for future careers.

Last fall, the food science team of Payton Armstrong, Katelyn Covington, Brianna Gahring and Nova Selck earned a Silver rating for creation of Berry Boost Brain Fuel at the 98th National FFA Convention and Expo in Indianapolis, Indiana.

“The food science team completed a product development project in which they designed a sports drink aimed at improving cognitive performance for high school teenagers. As part of the project, they created a product name and slogan, a bottle label, and a complete nutrition facts and ingredients label,” Wright said.

“They also developed a marketing plan tailored to their target audience and created a flow chart outlining where all materials and ingredients would be sourced.”

Students also identified possible hazards and explained how to prevent those issues, Wright said.

“This was completed alongside their audit activity, where members reviewed a mock company's policies and examined images to identify observed safety concerns, the corrective actions needed, the policies being violated and the type of risk involved,” she said.
