Canada’s dairy industry groups renewed calls for protections as Canada and the U.S. continue trade negotiations.
President Donald Trump’s 50 per cent tariffs are set to take effect on August 19. The levy will apply to a range of Canadian dairy products, among other goods.
News outlets, including CBC and the Globe and Mail reported late last week — based on unnamed insider sources — that Canada might be willing to make some concessions on dairy in hopes the Trump administration would lower tariffs. This, despite assurances from Prime Minister Mark Carney that his government is loyal to the dairy sector.
WHY IT MATTERS: The Trump administration has complained for some time that Canada discriminates against U.S. dairy, though Canadian dairy groups say American producers have already been given significant market access. Canadian dairy is the subject of U.S. tariffs set to take effect on August 19.
Dairy Farmers of Canada and the Dairy Processors Association of Canada, in a Thursday statement, said they were “disappointed to once again see dairy drawn into a broader trade dispute.”
