Canadian Federation of Agriculture to meet with Federal, Provincial and Territorial Agriculture Ministers

The Canadian Federation of Agriculture (CFA) is holding their Summer Meeting in Whitehorse this week.

The meeting is planned in conjunction with the Federal, Provincial and Territorial Agriculture Ministers Annual Conference.

CFA President Keith Currie says their Summer Meeting which covers two days has focused on a wide variety of issues from how ag production companies like Syngenta, BASF and Nutrien are looking to the future.

On Tuesday, members also had an update on COP 16 and 29 and from the Railway Association of Canada. Senator Rob Black talked about the Senate's Soil Health Study and was joined by Yukon Senator Pat Duncan and PEI Senator Mary Robinson in a discussion on Agriculture in the Canadian Senate.  There was also updates on national farmer wellness, the pork industry, and Canada's path to becoming an Agri-Food Innovation Superpower.

Today, the group hears from the Canadian Canola Grower's Association on the Agriculture Carbon Alliance and the Advanced Payments Program, as well as an update from Farm Credit Canada.

Currie notes a highlight of their Annual Summer Meeting is the Federal, Provincial and Territorial Agriculture Ministers Roundtable event.

"You know, really the purpose of this meeting is to really focus on what both the Federal Minister of Agriculture and his respective provincial and territorial counterparts can actually look at going forward, and what they can really do to help agriculture overall."

He says this year they want to hold a data driven innovation technology discussion with the Ministers.

"Data is going to be very important to all aspects of agriculture going forward, whether it's production on farm, whether it's what we need to do to meet international markets. What we will have to do under any climate change or changing climate, type of policy framework that be coming out of provincial, territorial and federal governments."

He points out that we're struggling a little bit to get the adequate and accurate data that we need.

"We're looking for those investments that will help us drive that."

Before trade and tariffs dominated the conversation, taxation was one of the biggest issues on farmers’ minds last year. From the carbon tax to capital gains, OFA worked with the Canadian Federation of Agriculture and provincial partners to push for fair, practical solutions. We saw progress on carbon tax relief and capital gains, and we continue to advocate for modernized farm tax programs at both the provincial and federal levels.
