Corn Intentions Highest on Record; Soybeans Up as Well

Canadian producers intend on planting the most corn acres on record in 2023, while also increasing soybean acres.

Wednesday’s Statistics Canada acreage report pegged nationwide corn intentions for this year at 3.72 million acres. That is up a modest 2.8% from a year earlier but would still top the 3.7 million acres planted in 2013 as the highest on record dating back to the early 1900s. Meanwhile, new-crop national soybean area was reported at 5.51 million acres, up 4.5% on the year and the highest since 5.71 million in 2019.

In Ontario, where over 60% of all corn for grain in Canada is grown, farmers anticipate planting 2.28 million acres, up 0.2% from 2022. If accurate, it would be a record area for the province, surpassing the previous record set in 2022.

Manitoba farmers said they intend to plant 461,600 acres to corn in 2023, up from 378,6000 a year earlier and besting the previous high of 459,800 acres in 2019.
