Corn Planting Has Begun

Corn is going into the ground in Montgomery County! Corn planting dates in South Georgia range from early March to early May. Getting those seeds in the ground early has its advantages with few drawbacks. Once soil temperature at the two-inch soil level reaches 55 degrees corn will sprout. Prompt germination needs temperatures of 60 degrees. It is best to plant when soil temperatures have stabilized and are on a warming trend. As mother nature has demonstrated this week, it sure does feel like summer is on the way.

To check local soil temperatures you can use www.GeorgiaWeather.net . Find the weather station nearest to you and click on soil temperature calculator. For the last 10 days the average soil temperature for the Vidalia Station at two inches has been 60 degrees.
