The Associate Director of the Swine Health Information Center says, despite regional increases in Porcine Epidemic Diarrhea detection in four states, the pork sector remains committed to significantly limiting or eliminating the virus.The Swine Health Information Center's June domestic swine disease monitoring report, released as part of its monthly eNewsletter, shows an increased detection of PRRS lineages 1C.5 and 1C.2, continued PRRS case positivity above 40 percent in wean to finish, increased PRRS case positivity in sow farms, an increase of the PRRS L1C.5 lineage in Iowa, Minnesota, South Dakota, and Indiana, reductions in PDCoV, PCV2, Influenza-A case positivity, a continued trend of low Mycoplasma positivity in sow farms and regional increases in PED detection in Iowa, Kansas, Indiana and North Carolina.SHIC Associate Director Dr. Lisa Becton says, despite the regional increases in Porcine Epidemic Diarrhea detection, the ultimate elimination of PED remains a goal.

While there is the regional case positivity it is something that we continue to monitor because of the impact of this disease.It really does not detract from the focus to eliminate and or significantly limit the spread of the virus into other areas where it's not as active so there's continued focus on different biosecurity interventions, transportation interventions as well as continuing to work with the veterinarians from AASV that are assessing what does an elimination program look like?In order to enact something like that it really is important to have the critical diagnostics and surveillance that go on with SDRS to know where hot spots are occurring but then also have a better understanding of what's the overall picture in the United States.
