Farms of Norfolk soccer tournament celebrates international agricultural workers

Orlando Kelly came to the West Street soccer park in Simcoe on Sunday ready to play some serious football.

A native of St. Catharine, Jamaica, he spends about seven months a year heading up the carrot operation at Pfennings Organic Farms in New Hamburg.

It’s the first year the farm brought a team of international workers to the Farms of Norfolk Football Association Tournament.

“We’re the team that came from the furthest away and were one of the first ones to arrive this morning,” said Kelly Pritchard, human relations manager at Pfennings. “That’s how excited they were.”

This is the seventh year for the tournament, which included a record 14 teams of about 300 international workers from farms in Brant, Haldimand, Norfolk and Oxford.
