The Manitoba Forage and Grassland Association is giving an update on this year's alfalfa crop.

"When we're looking at the first cut, especially the southeast area of the province, the guys were able to get quite a bit of the alfalfa off," said Extension Support Person John McGregor. "A lot of it came off though as silage, due to the harvesting conditions that we did have. Yields were considerably lower than normal that we've had."

McGregor says some producers are looking forward to a second cut after some good regrowth.

"The guys that got their crop off early, I have had a couple of guys come back and said they've had really good regrowth. We had the moisture in the southeast and the crop was able to come along fairly well. So they're looking forward to a second cut...There likely should be guys that are going ahead and starting second cut very soon."
