Harvest Starting For Corn And Sunflowers

Some Manitoba farmers have started with the grain corn harvest.

Morgan Cott is an Agronomy Extension Specialist with the Manitoba Crop Alliance.

"I think it's coming off reasonably dry," she said. "Last week the stuff that was being taken off early was in the high 20's or 28 per cent I think I was hearing, so that was a little damp. This week it sounds kind of all over the place. Some very, very dry and some in the low 20's I'd say."

Cott has been hearing of yields hitting the expected numbers, some in the range of about two/thirds of normal. However, it's still very early.

She says the sunflower harvest is also getting underway.

"A lot of desiccation has occurred. Some harvest is occurring too. I think slowly desiccation basically started maybe two weeks ago for the earlier stuff but I did see somebody harvesting it on Wednesday. There's still a lot of desiccation to happen yet. Sunflowers are just slowly chugging along. They're probably waiting until next week. It will definitely be stretched out but I think that that's welcome too right now."

Cott notes the timing of the corn harvest is on par with other years, however sunflowers are coming off early.
