Help Shape the Future of Weed Management in Michigan Specialty Crops

Weed management remains one of the most costly and persistent challenges for specialty crop growers across Michigan. From vegetables and fruit trees to berries and grapes, growers and crop advisors deal with diverse weed species emerging throughout growing seasons, rising cases of herbicide-resistant weeds, and a limited number of labeled and effective herbicide options. These challenges are compounded by high labor costs for hand weeding, as well as regulatory pressures that restrict the use of certain herbicides.

In the spring of 2023 OMAFA, along with the University of Guelph, gathered a group of 18 producers from the beef, sheep, and dairy sectors to support a three to four year research project related to measuring grass growth in Ontario. The producers use a Rising Plate Meter to capture grass growth and record livestock movements. This presentation will explain how the group interact/support one another, some initial findings, as well as the benefits for the research team and our farm.
