Funding Supports Design Study for Sustainable Aviation Fuel Manufacturing Facility in Manitoba

The governments of Canada and Manitoba have committed to bolstering Manitoba's competitive advantages in value-added agricultural processing and renewable transportation fuel processing.
To support this initiative, they are investing $2.9 million over two years in Azure Sustainable Fuels Corp.'s Front End Engineering Design (FEED) study for a sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) processing facility near Portage la Prairie, Manitoba.
This investment will not only drive Manitoba towards a low-carbon future but it will also benefit local agricultural producers.
The facility, estimated to cost $1.9 billion, will produce approximately one billion liters of SAF per year, primarily using Canadian feedstock such as canola and soybean oils.
The project is expected to create 1,500 construction jobs and around 150 permanent, specialized jobs once operational. Additionally, the construction of the facility will have a significant impact on Manitoba's economy, contributing $2 billion in total.
By utilizing the SAF process, the Azure facility aims to reduce approximately 2.6 million tonnes of CO2 emissions annually, equivalent to the emissions of 556,749 passenger vehicles.
Manitoba's sustainable farming practices further enhance the environmental benefits of this project, aligning with global decarbonization goals.
Benefits to local agricultural producers
The facility's feedstock demands will create a secure market for Manitoba farmers and oilseed producers, providing an opportunity to advance sustainable farming practices in the region.
Manitoba Premier Heather Stefanson expressed her enthusiasm, stating, "Our goal in supporting Azure is to have Manitoba recognized globally as a leader in successfully integrating agriculture with energy markets to provide a sustainable decarbonization solution while creating more good jobs."
Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food, the Honourable Marie-Claude Bibeau, highlighted the role of the agriculture sector in reducing emissions and supporting Canada's climate targets. She stated, "The Azure facility will help harness the power of sustainable energy while growing economic opportunities and contributing to Canada's 2030 Emissions Reduction Plan."
With this funding, Manitoba is on track to become a leading player in renewable transportation fuels, fostering innovation, economic growth, and environmental sustainability in the province.
