Humboldt native wins Saskatchewan Agriculture Student Scholarship grand prize

Provincial Agriculture Minister Lyle Stewart handed out the 2018 Saskatchewan Agriculture Student Scholarships this week.

Emma Hinz of Humboldt is the Grand Prize Winner of the 2018 Saskatchewan Agriculture Student Scholarship.

She says she just told her food story.

Emma has type 1 diabetes that also deals with celiac disease and wrote about the benefits of GMO insulin and how it has helped her:

"I was mentioning in my essay that advancement in GMO (Genetically Modified Organisms) has been able to produce insulins for people just like me to access safely,' she said. "It's available and should totally change ourselves and let us live normal lives like everyone else."

Emma won $4000 and plans to put it towards her education in Animal BioScience.

The other runner-up scholarship winners were Laura Carruthers of Frenchman Butte, Kati Culbertson of Redvers and Crystal Daniel of Avonlea.

Shayla Hertz is the Provincial Ag Awareness Specialist and said they had some great submissions again this year noting it was a tough competition for the judging panel with 53 applications coming in.

This year’s theme for the program was “Our Food Has A Story.”
