Map: Ontario Insured Winter Wheat Acres Down Only Slightly

Agricorp has released its latest Ontario winter wheat plantings map, with insured Soft Red acres for harvest in 2026 down only slightly from a year earlier.

Soft Red Winter wheat acres covered by production insurance are pegged by Agricorp at 801,900, down just 3,100 or less than 0.4% from the 805,000 insured for the 2025 harvest (see map below). Insured winter wheat acres for the 2024 harvest were sharply lower, at just 697,000. Soft Red makes up the vast majority of the total annual Ontario winter wheat crop.

A Statistics Canada crop production report released earlier this month showed total winter wheat planted acres in Ontario – both insured and uninsured – at 1.12 million acres. That is down a relatively modest 5.3% from a year earlier but still above the 1.008 million planted for harvest in 2024 and fourth straight year producers in the province have exceeded the 1-million acre threshold.

If accurate, it would mean roughly 72% of the Ontario Soft Red winter crop is under production insurance for the 2026 program year.

Total national winter wheat planted area for harvest in 2026 is estimated by StatsCan at 1.578 million acres, down about 113,000 or 6.6% from the 1.691 million planted in fall 2024 but still up from 1.466 million two years earlier.

What I’m Checking Behind the Planter This Spring

Video: What I’m Checking Behind the Planter This Spring

This is the first episode of a new behind-the-scenes series on our farm.

Today I’m checking behind the planter looking at planting depth, seed-to-soil contact, and making sure we’re placing seed into moisture, even in a dry spring.

Everything can look good from the cab, but this is where you find out what’s really happening.

We also ran into a prescription issue that slowed us down, which is a good reminder that even when conditions are ideal, the little things still matter.

If you’re planting right now, it’s worth taking a few minutes to check behind your planter.
