Main Street Mercantile honored for rural food access and innovation

Emily and Kaden Roush, owners of Main Street Mercantile in Lebanon, Kansas, have been named the 2026 Rural Grocers of the Year. The award was presented during the National Rural Grocery Summit held in Fargo, North Dakota, recognizing their strong contribution to rural grocery services.

The Rural Grocery Initiative, which presented the award, highlights independent grocers who show commitment to community service, innovation, and resilience in maintaining food access in rural areas. The Roushes were selected for their efforts to improve grocery availability in a small town with fewer than 200 residents.

After purchasing the store in 2022, the owners invested in major renovations and improvements. They upgraded the store’s infrastructure and expanded essential grocery services, including fresh produce, staple food items, and freshly cut meats. Their focus has been on meeting everyday needs while creating a welcoming shopping environment.

Main Street Mercantile also works closely with R Family Farms and other regional producers. Through these partnerships, the store offers a wide variety of farm raised products, including beef, pork, chicken, lamb, turkey, and bison. The store provides over 300 meat options, making it one of the largest selections in its region.

“Emily and Kaden exemplify the spirit of the Rural Grocery of the Year award,” said Clara Misenhelter, Program Manager with RGI. “Their dedication and commitment to their community are truly commendable.”

The business has become an important part of the local community. It not only supplies food but also creates jobs and supports area farmers. The store serves as both a grocery destination and a gathering place for residents and visitors.

“This award means a lot because we are still very much in the middle of the work,” said Emily Roush. “Keeping a rural grocery store alive is not easy, but we believe small towns deserve access to good food, gathering places, and businesses that make people proud of where they live. Main Street Mercantile exists because our community kept showing up, and because we believe rural places are worth fighting for.”

Officials from the Rural Grocery Initiative praised the Roushes for their dedication and community impact. The owners also emphasized that their success reflects ongoing efforts and strong community support. They believe rural towns deserve reliable food access and thriving local businesses.
