Learn Artificial Insemination of Cattle April 22-24 at Hands-On Workshop

Looking to rapidly improve the genetic progress of your herd? University of Missouri Extension dairy specialist Reagan Bluel says cattle producers can learn artificial insemination in a hands-on workshop in southwestern Missouri.

A team of MU Extension livestock and dairy specialists will teach a two-and-a-half-day “Artificial Insemination for Cattle” workshop April 22-24. The classroom portion of the workshop, Tuesday afternoon at FCS Financial, 108 N. Prosperity Ave. in Joplin, is to ensure understanding before beginning the hands-on portion. Topics include anatomy and physiology, heat detection, estrus synchronization programs, nutrition’s role in reproduction and dissection of the reproduction tract.

The “sleeves-on” portion begins April 23 at Joplin Regional Stockyards, 10131 Cimarron Road, Carthage. To ensure mastery, students will continue to practice the breeding process, start to finish, numerous times, Bluel says. Participants will also learn proper semen handling techniques, blood draw and hair sampling.

The small group size ensures plenty of hands-on practice of cattle insemination in a friendly learning environment for participants of any skill level, she says. All insemination equipment and material will be provided during practice, courtesy of class sponsor Select Sires.
