Nick Suwyn and other top wheat farmers earn state recognition
The Michigan Wheat Program recently recognized outstanding wheat growers for their strong performance during the 2025 growing season. The winners were announced at the Michigan Wheat Winter Grower Meeting, highlighting farmers who achieved excellent yields through careful management and modern practices.
In the dryland soft red winter wheat category, Clearview Farms, operated by Nick Suwyn in Allegan County, secured first place. Second place was awarded to Dick Suwyn from Kent County, followed by Bartle Farms, led by Dwight Bartle in Sanilac County, in third place.
In the irrigated soft red winter wheat category, Clearview Farms and Nick Suwyn of Barry County earned the top position. This impressive performance also made Nick Suwyn the overall state winner for Michigan with a yield of 185.6 bushels per acre.
At the national level, Michigan was strongly represented as Nick Suwyn placed second in the United States in the irrigated soft red winter wheat category during the 2025 National Wheat Yield Contest.
The Michigan Wheat Program works closely with the National Wheat Foundation to encourage innovation, knowledge sharing, and higher productivity among wheat growers. Farmers entering the national contest are automatically enrolled in Michigan’s state competition.
Registration is now open for the 2026 National Wheat Yield Contest, with winter wheat entries due by May 15. Through research, education, and farmer support, the Michigan Wheat Program continues to strengthen the state’s wheat industry.
