National Farm Safety and Health Week

“No one can take your place”, this year’s theme for National Farm Safety and Health Week, is fitting for our agricultural community! The 2021 data for the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics indicates that the agricultural sector is still the most dangerous in America with 453 fatalities. Fall harvest time can be one of the busiest and most dangerous seasons of the year for the agriculture industry.  Now is a great time to slow down, think twice and be safe while completing the busy harvest season.

The third week of September has been recognized as National Farm Safety and Health Week.  This annual promotion initiated by the National Safety Council has been proclaimed as such by each sitting U.S. President since Franklin D. Roosevelt in 1944. National Farm Safety and Health Week is led by the National Education Center for Agricultural Safety (NECAS), the agricultural partner of the National Safety Council. Check out the National Education Center for Agricultural Safety website to learn more about National Farm Safety and Healthy Week 2023.

Each day during National Farm Safety & Health Week, AgriSafe and Progressive Agriculture Safety Day Program will host webinars related to the daily topic of focus. Registration links are available on the National Education Center for Agricultural Safety website.

Daily Topics of Focus are as follows:

  • Monday, September 18, 2023 - Equipment and Rural Roadway Safety
  • Tuesday, September 19, 2023 - Health and Wellness
  • Wednesday, September 20, 2023 - Priority Populations
  • Thursday, September 21, 2023 - Confined Spaces
  • Friday, September 22, 2023 - Brain Health

Let’s all take time to celebrate September 17-23 as National Farm Safety and Health Week.

Border View Farms is a mid-sized family farm that sits on the Ohio-Michigan border. My name is Nathan. I make and edit all of the videos posted here. I farm with my dad, Mark and uncle, Phil. We also have a part-time employee, Brock. My dad started the farm in 1980. Since then we have grown the operation from just a couple hundred acres to over 3,000. Watch my 500th video for a history of our farm I filmed with my dad.

I started making these videos in the fall of 2019 as a way to help show what I do on a daily basis as a farmer. Agriculture is different from any other industry and I believe the more people that are showing their small piece of agriculture, helps to build our story. We face unique challenges and stressful situations but have some of the most rewarding payoffs in the end. I get to spend everyday doing what I love, raising my kids on the farm, and trying to push our farm to be better every year. I hope that I can address questions or concerns that you might have about farms and agriculture.

I hope you enjoy my content and ask questions as you have them. I do my best to answer anything I can. Thanks for watching!
