New $65M USDA Initiative supports farmworkers and employees

The agricultural landscape is set for a positive shift as the USDA introduces a pilot program with a robust $65 million fund. The Farm Labor Stabilization and Protection Pilot Program (FLSP Program) is designed to navigate the workforce challenges faced by the agricultural community, particularly farmers and ranchers.

The initiative is poised to establish a secure and health-conscious workspace for farmworkers. It aligns with the goal of maintaining a reliable food supply and is exploring lawful migration routes, including the opportunity provided by the H-2A visa program.

Tom Vilsack acknowledged the growing workforce dilemmas in agriculture, stressing the implications on food system resilience and the broader economy. The well-rounded program, shaped by insights from a range of stakeholders, envisions mutual benefits across the agricultural supply chain.

The eligibility criteria are well-defined, focusing on domestic agricultural employers who adhere to all relevant regulations and exhibit commitment to ensuring both baseline and additional worker benefits and protections.

The grants range from $25,000 to a substantial $2 million, with the amounts influenced by factors like the number of employees and application competitiveness. Prospective applicants have until November 28, 2023, to submit their proposals.

This program aligns with the president’s overarching goal of fostering economic growth, revitalizing infrastructure, generating employment opportunities, and paving the way for a greener, climate-resilient future.
