New US strategy targets reduction in food loss and waste

In an unprecedented move, the administration has announced a draft strategy for reducing food loss and waste in the U.S., demonstrating a firm commitment to environmental sustainability. This collaborative initiative by the USDA, EPA, and FDA aims to create a more sustainable food system by addressing the critical issue of food waste and its climate implications.

Outlined in the strategy are concerted efforts to prevent food loss and waste, increase organic waste recycling, and establish supportive policies.

Key actions proposed by USDA include a significant $30 million investment in the Composting and Food Waste Reduction Cooperative Agreements, enhancing partnerships for food loss and waste prevention education, and promoting research in advanced packaging technologies.

This strategic move is part of the broader National Strategy on Hunger, Nutrition, and Health and aligns with the administration’s goals for a sustainable agricultural sector.

By preventing food loss and waste, the strategy directly contributes to reducing greenhouse gas emissions, saving money for households and businesses, and creating cleaner communities.

The strategy also involves outreach to businesses about the protections under the Bill Emerson Good Samaritan Food Donation Act. The USDA encourages public feedback on this draft strategy, emphasizing the importance of community involvement in shaping sustainable practices.

This initiative marks a significant step in building a resilient, efficient, and environmentally friendly food system in the U.S., directly impacting the global climate crisis.
