OFT Turns 21!

Since 2004, our mission has remained constant: to protect Ontario’s irreplaceable farmlands, forever.

What began as a small group of volunteers building a land trust from the ground up has grown into a passionate community, a movement, and a legacy in motion. By the end of this year, we will have doubled our staff team, continuing to carry the mission forward with ambitious goals.

Together, we’ve protected over 2,700 acres of farmland across 26 properties, and we’re just getting started. Beyond the numbers, this work tells a broader story: of farmers who can pass their land on to the next generations, of ecosystems that remain intact, of food that stays local, and of communities that believe farmland is worth protecting.

To our volunteers, staff, donors, supporters, partners, and landowners, thank you. Your dedication has made OFT what it is today.

With new projects, partnerships, and regionalization efforts, we’re working to create more impact than ever before. We’re launching a Farmland Access program, aiming to protect 10,000 acres by 2029, developing agricultural preserve models, and supporting more communities in engaging in farmland protection.

Spider Mite Control with Predatory Mites (Neoseiulus californicus)

Video: Spider Mite Control with Predatory Mites (Neoseiulus californicus)

The predatory mite Neoseiulus californicus is an effective natural enemy of various species of spider mites, including the two-spotted spider mite (Tetranychus urticae). As a key player in biological pest control, this predator helps growers protect their crops sustainably.

How does Neoseiulus californicus work?

•Specializes in targeting the larval and nymphal stages of spider mites.

•Also consumes spider mite eggs, ensuring population control.

•Detects prey through webbing and leaf damage rather than sight.

•Feeds by sucking out the contents of its prey.

Why use Neoseiulus californicus for spider mite control?

•Highly adaptable to different environments, including warm and dry conditions.

•Works as both a preventive and curative solution for spider mite infestations.

•Complements other predatory mites, such as Phytoseiulus persimilis, for integrated pest management (IPM).

•A natural, sustainable alternative to chemical pesticides.
