Open Farm Days happening this weekend

Saskatchewan Open Farm Days is returning this weekend.

Self-drive tours and bus tours are happening Saturday and Sunday at participating farms throughout the province.

Event spokesperson Ashley Stone joined Good Morning Saskatchewan with Cody and Gloria on Wednesday and said its a chance for people of all backgrounds - from those who grew up on a farm showing the younger generation to individuals who know little about agriculture - to learn where their food comes from.

Every kind of operation - from dairy, beef cattle and pigs to traditional grain - will be featured during Open Farm Days.

"It's so diverse being able to capture the story, so we're excited these 35 hosts are on board and opening their doors. It's a good weekend." said Stone.

Tours will be around southern Saskatchewan, including Moose Jaw, Regina, Val Marie, Swift Current, Moosomin, and Minton. Farms around the central and northwestern parts of the province are also involved.

She encourages everyone to spend a day at one of the participating farms.

"Every farm offers something free for you to check out so you can go and have a really affordable weekend out exploring."

A map of farms taking part in Open Farms Day Saturday and Sunday, and how to register, is online at skopenfarmdays.ca under the "visit a farm" tab.

Video: SaskAgToday.com Roundtable: China hits Canada with canola seed tariffs

The big story this week was China placing a 75.8 per cent anti-dumping duty on Canadian canola seed imports.

While China claims the duty is temporary - pending the conclusion of its anti-dumping investigation into Canadian canola next month - many are calling on the federal government to take the lead and get the tariffs removed. The SaskAgToday.com Roundtable discusses what farm groups, and politicians, have been saying.

Also, the panel highlights a grand opening of Grain Millers flax processing facility, limited harvest progress in Saskatchewan due to widespread rain, and the Grain Growers of Canada on its second annual Summer Tour.
