Options For Small Acreage Owners In Times Of Drought

As we enter the fourth consecutive year of drought some agricultural landowners are wondering if this is the new normal. When irrigation is not available throughout the growing season, less drought tolerant plants die-out. This translates to reduced productivity, less revenue, and increased chance of soil erosion and weed invasion. Small acreage owners need to plan for these times of drought and understand the suitable plant options.

The Agriculture Innovation Forum for Tuesday, March 31, 6pm, at the CVIC Hall in Minden, will feature Jay Davison, Forage and Alternative Crops Specialist, University of Nevada Cooperative Extension. Jay will discuss the best plants to consider growing such as cool season annuals and deep rooted perennials. "Is there something we can grow besides grass and alfalfa hay" is a question that small acreage owners frequently ask. Jay will address this question while factoring in the realities of drought.

The Agriculture Innovation Forum Series is designed to provide practical information and know-how for agricultural producers and small acreage owners to optimize their land use potential and maintain agricultural open space in Carson Valley. It is held the last Tuesday of the month. The AIFS is intended to be an open dialogue format allowing attendees ample opportunity to ask questions and learn. The Series is held at the CVIC Hall, 1604 Esmeralda Ave., Minden, from 6-8pm. For more information on the March 31st forum on Agricultural Options for Small Acreage Landowners in Times of Drought.
