Public Comment Period open April 13-June 12, 2026

The Code of Practice for the Care and Handling of Beef Cattle is a nationally recognized, science-informed standard that demonstrates how Canadian cattle producers care for their animals every day. This Code update is part of a regular review process to ensure the Code reflects evolving science, on-farm realities, technologies, and societal and marketplace expectations. It builds on what is already working and seeks to build opportunities to strengthen animal care and enhance confidence in the sector.

The code helps align standards across the country and demonstrates the industry’s commitment to continuous improvement that is grounded in the on-farm realities of producers.

Producer input is central to the process. The Code is developed through a consensus-based approach through the National Farm Animal Care Council (learn more in video below). Participation in the review is an important opportunity for producers to have their experience and perspectives reflected in the public comment period.

The Canadian Cattle Association has prepared a high-level summary of the draft Beef Code content to help support producers in providing comments. Please note, this is not an exhaustive list. Producers are encouraged to have a full review of the draft content to provide feedback.
