Pulse Canada Welcomes Canada–india Partnership Momentum on Pulses and Protein Collaboration

Pulse Canada welcomed today’s announcement by the Right Honourable Mark Carney, Prime Minister of Canada, and the Honourable Shri Narendra Modi, Prime Minister of India, to launch negotiations toward a Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) between Canada and India, alongside a shared Declaration of Intent to explore the establishment of a Canada–India Joint Pulse Protein Centre of Excellence.

Pulses play a uniquely strategic role in the relationship between Canada and India, supporting both farmer livelihoods and nutrition security. The pulse partnership between the two countries is expected to strengthen as demand grows and as pulses and pulse ingredients are incorporated into a wider range of processed food products. A delegation from Pulse Canada and its members is present in India this week for meetings to reinforce the sector’s commitment to this partnership.

“The Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) between Canada and India will be critical to leveraging the full potential of our pulse partnership well into the future,” said Terry Youzwa, Chair of Pulse Canada.

The Declaration of Intent on a joint Centre of Excellence reflects a common commitment to strengthening food and nutrition security through applied research, processing innovation, and capacity building in pulse-based foods and ingredients.

“For Pulse Canada and its members, this approach underscores the value of partnership-led engagement, bringing together industry, academia, and government to focus on the role pulses can play in the future of food,” said Greg Cherewyk, President of Pulse Canada.

Collaborative work on nutrition outcomes, ingredient functionality, quality assurance, and processing alignment can help ensure pulses are integrated into large-scale food and nutrition applications.

Pulse Canada looks forward to continuing its work with industry partners, government stakeholders, and Indian and Canadian institutions to support collaboration that is future-focused. By working on shared challenges and opportunities in nutrition and food processing, Canada and India can build a forward-looking pulse partnership that supports growth, innovation, and long-term cooperation.

Meet Willy: California Farm Bureau’s 2025 Farm Dog of the Year!

We’re excited to introduce Willy, a miniature long-haired dachshund with a big heart and even bigger courage, and the Grand Prize winner of this year’s Farm Dog of the Year Contest!

Willy may be small, but he’s become an indispensable partner on owner Marshal Hagedorn’s forestry and cattle operations in Shasta, Tehama, and Siskiyou counties. Adopted in 2023, he quickly found his place on the ranch, helping manage critters, tagging along for long days in the woods, and offering unwavering companionship during demanding logging work.

Willy has even taken naturally to moving cattle, surprising calves (and more than a few full-grown cows!) with his burst of energy from the tall grass. As Marshal put it: “He goes with me everywhere every single day.”

Congratulations to Willy and his family, a perfect example of how every good farm dog, no matter the size, helps keep California agriculture running strong.
