SDSU Extension to Host Precision Livestock Field Day in Brookings

SDSU Extension will host a Precision Livestock Management Field Day on Dec. 8, 2023, in Brookings.

The event is from 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Cow-Calf Education and Research Facility, 2901 Western Ave., Brookings. The day will include presentations, hands-on demonstrations of precision technology systems and a tour of the SDSU Cow-Calf Education and Research Facility. A light breakfast and lunch will be provided.

Logan Vandermark, SDSU Extension Precision Livestock Field Specialist, said attendees can see how precision technology is incorporated into beef cattle production. The field day will also introduce some of the technology that will be featured at next summer’s precision livestock field school for producers.

“Early exposure to this technology will serve as an opportunity to gauge future interest in learning more about how this can benefit their operation as well as how data-driven decisions can impact the cattle market as a whole,” Vandermark said. “I look forward to meeting producers in eastern South Dakota and learning about their perspectives on precision livestock technologies.”

Presenters include Vandermark, SDSU Extension Range Field Specialist Kaylee Wheeler, SDSU Extension Beef Nutrition Field Specialist Madison Kovarna and SDSU Extension Beef Nutrition Field Specialist Sydney Vanderhoff on topics including precision feeding and weighing systems, the importance of the cattle industry in South Dakota and current research projects at the Cow-Calf Education and Research Facility.

Tickets are $30. Registration is required. To register, visit the SDSU Extension Events page and search “precision”.

Video: Building Better Barns: Innovations in Hog Facility Design with PSI’s Tim Messinger

In this exclusive interview from the 2025 Iowa Pork Congress Rachel Fishback and Swineweb sit down with Tim Messinger, a seasoned expert from Precision Structures Inc. (PSI) of Wellman, Iowa, to delve into the latest trends and innovations in hog barn construction and remodeling.

With nearly two decades at PSI, Tim shares his journey from draftsman to sales, highlighting the company’s comprehensive services in building farrow-to-wean complexes, finishers, and nurseries. He emphasizes the critical role of proper site layout and grading in barn construction, ensuring long-term efficiency and scalability for pork producers.

Tim also discusses the increasing importance of advanced ventilation systems and smart controllers like Maximus and AP Edge, which offer producers enhanced monitoring and control over barn environments. As construction costs have risen, PSI has seen an uptick in remodeling projects, particularly in slat replacements, roof refurbishments and barn gating remodels to extend the lifespan of existing facilities.

A key takeaway from Tim is the value of partnering with reputable builders who offer robust post-sale support. PSI’s dedicated service team stands ready to assist clients 24/7, addressing emergencies and ensuring optimal barn performance.

For pork producers looking to build or upgrade their facilities, this conversation offers valuable insights into best practices and the latest industry developments.
