University of Manitoba welcomes Linda Schott as Potato Sustainability Chair

The University of Manitoba (UM) has appointed Dr. Linda Schott as the inaugural UM Research Chair in Potato Sustainability, a transformative initiative aimed at educating students and advancing innovation and sustainability in Manitoba’s thriving potato industry.

Dr. Schott joined the Faculty of Agricultural and Food Sciences as Associate Professor in the Department of Plant Science on July 1, 2025, bringing a wealth of expertise in agronomy, soil health, water management, and storage.

Dr. Schott earned her PhD in Biological Engineering from the University of Nebraska–Lincoln and most recently served as Assistant Professor and Extension Specialist in Nutrient and Waste Management at the University of Idaho.

“I’m honored to be named the inaugural UM Research Chair in Potato Sustainability and thrilled to join Manitoba’s vibrant agricultural community,” said Dr. Schott. This role offers an incredible opportunity to collaborate with industry leaders and potato growers, conduct impactful research, and train the next generation of professionals dedicated to sustainable potato production. I’m excited to contribute to innovations that will support growers, strengthen our food systems, and ensure long-term environmental resilience.”

The Chair is made possible through a visionary partnership between UM and key players in the provincial potato sector, with generous support from industry leaders including the J.R. Simplot Company Foundation, McCain Foods, Keystone Potato Producers and Peak of the Market. This initiative will strengthen research, education, and technology transfer in potato production and processing, with a focus on sustainability, climate resilience, and economic competitiveness.

Border View Farms is a mid-sized family farm that sits on the Ohio-Michigan border. My name is Nathan. I make and edit all of the videos posted here. I farm with my dad, Mark and uncle, Phil. Our part-time employee, Brock, also helps with the filming. 1980 was our first year in Waldron where our main farm is now. Since then we have grown the operation from just a couple hundred acres to over 3,000. Watch my 500th video for a history of our farm I filmed with my dad.

I started making these videos in the fall of 2019 as a way to help show what I do on a daily basis as a farmer. Agriculture is different from any other industry and I believe the more people that are showing their small piece of agriculture, helps to build our story. We face unique challenges and stressful situations but have some of the most rewarding payoffs in the end. I get to spend everyday doing what I love, raising my kids on the farm, and trying to push our farm to be better every year. I hope that I can address questions or concerns that you might have about farms and agriculture.
