Central America sees strong growth in premium US beef demand

U.S. beef exports to Central America are continuing to grow in 2025, building on a record year in 2024. According to the U.S. Meat Export Federation (USMEF), demand for American beef is increasing sharply across the region, especially for premium beef cuts.

Lucia Ruano, the USMEF regional representative based in Guatemala City, reports that Central American consumers are showing more interest in high-quality beef products. These products are now commonly available in meat boutiques, which offer upscale cuts to satisfy the changing tastes of consumers. The growth in these markets is supported by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) and the Beef Checkoff Program, which help promote U.S. beef through various marketing and outreach efforts.

Another factor contributing to this trend is the rapid expansion of the restaurant and hospitality industries in Central America. Rising tourism, especially in countries like El Salvador and Guatemala, is driving this demand. These countries, once lesser-known tourist spots, are now seeing more visitors, leading to a rise in food service opportunities that include American beef dishes.

As of April 2025, exports of U.S. beef to Central America increased 9% in volume compared to the same period in 2024. The total volume reached 8,131 metric tons. More impressively, the value of these exports surged by 30%, surpassing $70 million. This shows a clear shift toward higher-end beef consumption in the region.

Ruano says USMEF is committed to expanding these gains by continuing promotional efforts in both retail and food service sectors. With ongoing support from USDA and Beef Checkoff, the outlook for U.S. beef in Central America remains strong.

This growth reflects how strategic support and changing regional trends can boost international agricultural trade.
