USDA Expands Crop Insurance for Dry Bean and Dry Pea Revenue Programs

The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) announced improvements to the dry bean and dry pea revenue crop insurance program for the 2025 and succeeding crop years. USDA’s Risk Management Agency (RMA) is expanding insurance options for dry bean and dry pea producers in select counties in Minnesota, Montana, Nebraska, North Dakota and Wisconsin.

“The Risk Management Agency is continually adjusting our programs to provide the best risk management resources and to meet the needs of our dry bean and dry pea producers,” said Laura Heinrich, Director of RMA’s Regional Office that covers Minnesota and Wisconsin. “Enhancing and expanding the dry bean and dry pea programs will provide more options and flexibilities for more producers.”

Expansions include:

  • Minnesota – dry bean revenue protection is now available in Dakota County
  • Montana – dry pea revenue protection is now available in Meagher and Musselshell counties
  • Nebraska – large and small chickpea revenue protection is now available in all existing dry pea program counties
  • North Dakota – dark red kidney dry bean revenue protection is now available in Kidder and Steele counties
  • Wisconsin - dark red kidney bean revenue protection is now available in Adams, Chippewa, Dunn, Eau Claire, Portage and Waupaca counties

In 2024, producers utilized revenue protection on one million acres of dry beans and nearly two million acres of dry peas insuring over $1 billion in liabilities nationwide.

The sales closing date for the 2025 crop year is March 15, 2025.

Crop insurance is sold and delivered solely through private crop insurance agents. A list of crop insurance agents is available at all USDA Service Centers and online at the RMA Agent Locator. RMA secures the future of agriculture by providing world class risk management tools to rural America through Federal crop insurance and risk management education programs. RMA provides policies for more than 130 crops and is constantly working to adjust and create new policies based on producer needs and feedback.

USDA touches the lives of all Americans each day in so many positive ways. Under the Biden-Harris administration, USDA is transforming America’s food system with a greater focus on more resilient local and regional food production, fairer markets for all producers, ensuring access to safe, healthy and nutritious food in all communities, building new markets and streams of income for farmers and producers using climate smart food and forestry practices, making historic investments in infrastructure and clean energy capabilities in rural America, and committing to equity across the Department by removing systemic barriers and building a workforce more representative of America.
