The 2022 growing season benefited from some of the best spring and summer weather conditions ever recorded in Eastern Ontario (and Ontario generally), and it’s a good bet that positive trend will carry through with good, dry harvest conditions over the next couple of months, Environment Canada Senior Climatologist David Phillips told Farmers Forum.
In climatology, the adage is “what you see is what you’re going to get,” explains Phillips in a forecast for the coming fall.
2022 has been remarkable in its lack of extreme weather, he says. Instead, temperatures and precipitation have been remarkably consistent and just a little above average on both counts in Eastern Ontario. Expect more of that for the remainder of the growing season and likely “warm and dry” conditions for harvest, Phillips suggests.
But don’t expect the first killing frost to be as late as it was last year. Half of the time, a killing frost arrives on or before Oct. 2, Phillips cautioned.
