Worn Roller Bearings Leading Causes of Hay Equipment Fires

Simple Fire Safety Steps Help Keep Haying Operations Productive and Safe

Dry conditions across many parts of the country are increasing the chance of hayfield fires during the haying season. Farmers are encouraged to inspect equipment regularly and follow fire prevention practices to reduce the risk of fires while cutting and baling hay.

North Dakota State University Extension farm and ranch safety specialist Angie Johnson and North Dakota State Forester Tom Claeys encourage producers to prepare equipment before entering the field. Routine inspections and preventive maintenance help identify worn parts that may overheat or create sparks capable of starting a fire.

“A simple spark from a sickle mower or hay rake contacting a rock can lead to a grass fire situation quickly,” says Tom Claeys, North Dakota state forester. “We’re experiencing an influx of grass fires, and with the amount of ‘fuel’ or biomass in the ditches, meadows and Conservation Reserve Program areas, it is substantial this year. There’s enough ‘fuel’ out there that can easily catch fire with just one spark and quickly become out of control.”

Johnson explains that worn roller bearings inside balers remain one of the leading causes of hay equipment fires because damaged bearings create excessive heat during operation.

Farmers should inspect bearings, belts, chains, hydraulic hoses, and moving parts every day. Loose belts, damaged bearings, and built-up twine or net wrap should be repaired or removed immediately. Regular lubrication also reduces friction and helps prevent overheating.

“We have to remember that there is a tremendous amount of friction and static that is building up during baling,” says Johnson. “That combination of friction and static electricity or a mechanical failure on the baler added to extremely dry hay or straw is the perfect recipe for a fire.”

She also recommends using an infrared heat thermometer to check roller bearing temperatures during breaks.

Farmers should always carry a fire extinguisher, water, a shovel, and a fully charged cellphone while working. Equipment should be parked on mowed grass, gravel, or bare ground whenever possible.

Johnson leaves producers with an important reminder: “A baler can be replaced. You can’t.”
