CHARITON, Iowa —
Iowa State University Extension will host two workshops for beef producers June 15 at the McNay Research Farm. Greenhorn Grazing, session two, will start at 1:30 p.m., with a value-added feeder calf programs discussion beginning at 7 p.m. Both meetings will be conducted at the McNay headquarters located 6.5 miles southwest of the Chariton airport.

Session one of Greenhorn Grazing was held on May 26 with 40 participants. Producers interested in attending the second or later sessions can attend for $15 per meeting. Session two will include discussions on managing grass heights, selecting forages for specific locations, value-added marketing, managing grass-fed beef, supplementation strategies and a pasture walk covering various forage topics. This program is supported by the Leopold Center for Sustainable Agriculture, the Iowa Beef Center and Dow AgroSciences. An evening meal is included.

“Value-Added Feeder Calf Programs” will feature a presentation by Ryan Jepsen, Grass Run Farm, on his plans to source southern Iowa and northern Missouri grass-fed or natural-raised calves into his beef finishing and marketing programs in northeast Iowa. Joe Sellers, ISU Extension beef program specialist, will discuss qualifying for age and process verification premiums, and the retained ownership opportunities provided by MACEP and TCSCF. There is no fee for this meeting.
