Governor General Alexander Cambridge’s (pictured) throne speech on Jan. 27, 1944 opened the fifth session of Canada’s 19th Parliament led by Prime Minister William Lyon Mackenzie King’s government.

Canada remained in the midst of the Second World War, but the government committed to taking proactive measures to ensure the wellbeing of Canadians post-war.

“My Ministers believe that, to prevent inflation and to safeguard a basic standard of living, it remains necessary to maintain the price ceiling and stabilization of wages and salaries,” Cambridge said. “To ensure economic stability for agriculture, you will be asked to make provision for a price floor for staple farm products.”
