On Jan. 28, 1943, Governor General Alexander Cambridge (pictured) delivered a throne speech to chart the course for Prime Minister William Lyon Mackenzie King’s government during the fourth session of Canada’s 19th Parliament.

As a member of the United Nations, Canada was part of a collaboration with the United States to ensure people around the world didn’t go hungry.

“A Joint Committee representative of the Departments of Agriculture of Canada and the United States has been agreed upon to co-ordinate the efforts of the two countries in the production of food for the United Nations,” Cambridge said in his speech.
