Major League Baseball’s spring training league in Florida is named after the grapefruit.
The story of how the league got its name dates to 1915.
Ruth Law, an American aviator, took a Brooklyn Dodgers player in an airplane during a flying exhibition in Daytona Beach, Fla. The player was supposed to drop a baseball from the airplane to his manager.
Worried the baseball would hurt his manager, the player instead decided to throw down a grapefruit, which exploded when it hit his manager.
