This Alaskan town had a population of seven at the time of the 2010 U.S. Census. The community was founded on gold mining and is one of the few surviving gold rush towns in the state.
In 1902, the town became the second in the state to incorporate after Ketchikan did so one year earlier.
Originally, miners wanted to name the community Ptarmigan after a local bird that looks like a chicken. Nobody could agree on a correct spelling for Ptarmigan, so they chose Chicken, the town’s website says.
