9 Places Named After Food

Bacon Cove, Nfld.

Bacon Cove, Nfld.

This farming and fishing settlement is part of Conception Harbour in Newfoundland and Labrador.

How the community got its name isn’t exactly known.

One story says that, in the 1600s, locals paid English pirate Peter Easton with two pigs if he would leave the residents alone.

Another tale is that, after a shipwreck in the harbour led to several pigs washing up on shore, locals made bacon to ensure the hogs didn’t go to waste.
