Chicken, Alaska

Chicken, Alaska

During the 1800s, gold miners in Alaska filled their bellies with ptarmigans, the state bird which looks like a chicken.

In 1902, when the town was to become incorporated and it needed a name, locals first opted for Ptarmigan.

But, when no one could agree on how to spell the word, they went with Chicken.
