ACEP supports farmland protection wetlands restoration and long term conservation

The Agricultural Conservation Easement Program, known as ACEP, is a national conservation effort designed to protect farmland and natural landscapes that support agriculture. The program helps keep land available for farming and grazing while safeguarding important environmental values. By limiting nonagricultural development, ACEP maintains the long-term productivity of agricultural land and the conservation benefits it provides to communities.

ACEP includes two main components. The first is Agricultural Land Easements, or ALE. These easements help protect working farms and ranches by preventing land from being converted into uses that reduce agricultural productivity. ALE also supports open space, wildlife habitat, and historic landscapes. Landowners interested in ALE work through eligible entities such as land trusts, municipalities, or state agencies. Applications that protect strong conservation values and maintain large areas of farmland receive priority from NRCS.

The second component is Wetland Reserve Easements, or WRE. Through this option, landowners apply directly to the Natural Resources Conservation Service for a conservation easement that restores or protects wetlands impacted by past agricultural activity. WRE supports many environmental benefits, including improved water quality, groundwater recharge, reduced flooding, and enhanced habitat for fish and wildlife. These wetlands often provide shelter for threatened or endangered species and allow for limited recreational activities.

ACEP is supported by NRCS, which has led national conservation efforts since 1935. The agency works with private landowners to improve soil, water, and wildlife resources on working lands. To take part in ACEP or complete eligibility forms, landowners can contact their local USDA Service Center for guidance.

By combining agricultural protection with environmental stewardship, ACEP helps ensure that productive farmland, healthy wetlands, and valuable wildlife habitats remain strong for future generations.
