International Wheat Agreement

International Wheat Agreement

Governor General Harold Alexander’s throne speech on Sept. 15, 1949 charted the country’s path forward under the leadership of Prime Minister Louis Saint Laurent in the first session of Canada’s 21st Parliament.

The governor general spoke of Canada’s involvement in the International Wheat Agreement, saying it would “provide additional economic security for many of our farmers.”

In May 1949, Canada, the United States and other wheat-producing countries signed the agreement “to assure supplies of wheat to importing countries and markets for wheat to exporting countries at equitable and stable prices,” the document says.

In 1995, the International Grains Agreement replaced the International Wheat Agreement.
