
Nov. 12, 1953 marked the opening of the first session of Canada’s 22nd Parliament. Louis Saint Laurent served as prime minister and Vincent Massey as governor general.
Massey’s throne speech mentioned a piece of legislation for the pork sector.
“A bill to amend the Animal Contagious Diseases Act, to provide for appropriate compensation to farmers whose hogs suffered from cholera, will be placed before you,” Massey said.
Today, hog cholera is commonly referred to as Classical swine fever. It’s a reportable disease and the Canadian Food Inspection Agency must be informed of all cases.
