Governor General Vincent Massey’s throne speech on Jan. 7, 1955 laid out the plan for Prime Minister Louis Saint Laurent’s government in the second session of Canada’s 22nd Parliament.

The government provided an update on help it provided to farmers who suffered losses from storms.

The government used the Agricultural Prices Support Act to help Nova Scotia apple growers who lost their crops as a result of the inclement weather. Politicians would be tasked with making final provisions for the assistance.

In addition, a bill was to be introduced to “replace the Meat and Canned Foods Act by measures to provide for the inspection of meat and for the establishment of standards for all agricultural products,” the governor general said.
