New multi‑crop seed brand newgold® gives farmers access to emerging biofuel markets while supporting flexibility, sustainability, and long‑term profitability.

Bayer has announced the launch of newgold® seed in the United States and Canada, its first multi‑crop seed brand designed specifically for low‑carbon intensity crops.

The initiative is aimed at helping farmers directly participate in the expanding market for renewable diesel and sustainable aviation fuel while enhancing profitability and maintaining operational flexibility.

Demand for low‑carbon fuels continues to climb worldwide, raising an important challenge: how to scale production without competing with food crops or adding complexity to farming systems.

Bayer believes agriculture can play a central role in delivering reliable, scalable feedstocks that support the global energy transition.

“Innovation alone won’t make the energy transition real,” said Chad Bilby, Biofuel Crops Innovation and Commercial Lead at Bayer. “Scale, execution, and market confidence matter. With newgold® seed, we are connecting seed innovation, agronomic performance, and market access into one clear opportunity for farmers.”

Developed under the Biofuel Crops by Bayer platform, newgold® seed represents a shift from viewing biofuels as a downstream processing opportunity to building an integrated agricultural system that connects farmers, fuel producers, and end‑markets.

The new brand focuses on low‑carbon intensity oilseed crops, including Camelina and Winter canola

These crops are engineered to fit into existing farming systems. They can be planted between major seasons, incorporated into crop rotations, or grown on underutilised or marginal acreage—creating potential new revenue streams without requiring structural changes to a farm’s operation.

Through a blend of seed innovation, agronomic support, and industry partnerships, Bayer aims to make adoption of these crops easier and more profitable for growers.

In the spring of 2023 OMAFA, along with the University of Guelph, gathered a group of 18 producers from the beef, sheep, and dairy sectors to support a three to four year research project related to measuring grass growth in Ontario. The producers use a Rising Plate Meter to capture grass growth and record livestock movements. This presentation will explain how the group interact/support one another, some initial findings, as well as the benefits for the research team and our farm.

The purpose of the Profitable Pastures conference is to bring fresh ideas and new research results to Ontario grazing managers across the ruminant livestock sectors. These conferences have a major focus on pasture management
