The scholarship is for people enrolled in post-secondary ag programs

A B.C. ag organization has launched a scholarship to support the next generation of farmers and leaders.

The BC Agriculture Council’s (BCAC) new BC Young Farmers Scholarship is for residents between the ages of 19 and 40 and enrolled in a post-secondary agriculture program.

Statistics Canada data from 2023 showed B.C. had 642 students enrolled in post-secondary programs related to agriculture at schools like the University of British Columbia, Thompson Rivers University, and University of the Fraser Valley.

Supporting these students with a scholarship ensures B.C.’s ag industry has the people it needs to succeed.

“We know the future of our sector depends on passionate, skilled individuals, and this program is one way we can help remove barriers and invest directly in the next generation of leaders,” Rebecca Senicar, chair of the BCAC’s Young Farmers Committee, said in a statement.

British Columbians interested in the scholarship must apply.

The application includes three questions.

Applicants are asked to describe their experience in the ag sector, to describe their career goals and objectives, and how their field of study supports B.C. and Canadian ag.

Written and video responses are allowed.

The BCAC will accept applications until Tuesday, April 7.

The winner will be notified before the end of April, and will be invited to the BC Agriculture Forum in June for an official presentation.
