Crossbred cattle help fill US beef supply gap and improve performance

Beef on dairy cattle is playing a growing role in the livestock industry as traditional beef supplies remain limited. These animals are produced when dairy cows are bred with beef genetics, creating calves with greater market value and stronger performance potential.

The increasing use of beef on dairy breeding has helped dairy producers create additional income opportunities while supporting the beef sector. Today, a significant number of dairy farms use this breeding strategy, and crossbred cattle account for a large share of feedlot placements.

Recent research shows that beef on dairy cattle generally performs well in feedlots. They often gain weight faster and experience lower mortality rates compared to conventional beef cattle. Their strongest advantages are seen when they enter feedlots at lighter weights, allowing feedlots to capture more of their efficient early growth.

Feedlot managers closely monitor factors such as average daily gain, feed efficiency, and animal health. Studies indicate that beef on dairy cattle can deliver strong daily weight gains and good performance, especially when managed properly. However, their growth and feed efficiency advantages tend to decline as placement weights increase.

The importance of these cattle continues to grow as the U.S. cattle inventory remains historically low. Beef on dairy animals helps fill supply gaps while providing processors and feedlots with an additional source of cattle.

Industry experts believe stronger coordination among dairy farms, calf raisers, backgrounders and feedlots could further improve results. Earlier placement in feedlots may allow operators to maximize growth potential and improve overall efficiency.

As beef supplies remain tight, beef on dairy cattle is expected to become an even more important part of the livestock sector. Their ability to support beef production, maintain strong health outcomes, and contribute to feedlot efficiency makes them an asset throughout the supply chain. Continued research and improved management practices will help producers capture the full value of these crossbred animals.
