National harvest assessment adds Eastern wheat analysis

The 2025 crop year marks a significant milestone for Cereals Canada as it expands its wheat quality analysis to a national scale. Known for over 50 years as a trusted expert in Western Canadian wheat quality, the Winnipeg-based organization is partnering with Grain Farmers of Ontario to include Eastern wheat classes in its annual Harvest Assessment Program.

This collaboration brings together technical experts to evaluate both Western and Eastern Canadian wheat, enhancing Canada’s reputation as a premier global wheat supplier.

"Cereals Canada is the trusted source for quality information on Western Canadian wheat, and our technical experts understand the data needed to support our domestic and global markets,” said Dean Dias, chief executive officer at Cereals Canada. “Our partnership with Grain Farmers of Ontario brings that same level of expertise to Eastern Canadian wheat. This united, comprehensive approach will help to strengthen Canada's global position as a premier wheat supplier."

The program traditionally analyzes four Western wheat classes: Canada Western Red Spring (CWRS), Canada Western Amber Durum (CWAD), Canada Prairie Spring Red (CPSR), and Canada Western Red Winter (CWRW).

New this year are four Eastern classes, including Canada Eastern Soft Red Winter (CESRW), with samples provided through Ontario’s annual wheat harvest survey.

Cereals Canada’s technical team will test composite samples for milling performance, flour or semolina quality, and end-use functionality such as bread, pasta, noodles, and cookies. These findings will form the 2025 New Wheat Crop Report, scheduled for release on November 18, 2025, at cerealscanada.ca.

Additional assessments of Canada Eastern Hard Red Winter, Canada Eastern Red Spring, and Canada Eastern Soft White Winter will be available to customers upon request. Funding for the Western program comes partly from the Government of Canada through the Canadian Agricultural Partnership’s AgriScience Program, while Grain Farmers of Ontario supports Eastern assessments.

By uniting expertise across regions, this partnership ensures Canadian wheat continues to meet high standards for both domestic and international markets, reinforcing the country’s leadership in global grain quality.
