Handcrafted trophy blends K State wheat research farmer pride and football tradition
A unique wheat trophy created in Kansas celebrates the legacy of a respected football coach while highlighting the importance of wheat research and farmer stewardship. The handcrafted piece was designed using the KS Bill Snyder hard red winter wheat variety developed by Kansas State University and released in 2023.
The trophy was created by an American straw artist who used only wheat straw from licensed Kansas test fields. The artist selected the wheat based on stem strength, length, color, and structure. These qualities helped form a durable and visually meaningful design that connects agriculture and Kansas culture.
The wheat used in the project was carefully hand harvested from test fields near Yoder, Kansas. Permission was granted by a licensed seed company to collect and use the straw. Several bundles of wheat were used to create the final handcrafted trophy.
The design was inspired by a traditional European harvest form that represents gratitude, renewal, and legacy. The three-tier structure reflects Kansas wheat production, K State research, and the lasting impact of agriculture on rural communities.
The upper tier displays fanned wheat heads and a star symbol that represents Kansas values. The middle section symbolizes the state’s rich soil and the value stored in each wheat head. The base features a football medallion that transforms the design into a recognizable sports trophy.
Every part of the football was made using the same wheat straw. Flattened straw formed the football surface, while fine straw threads were carefully spun and sewn to create seams and edges. Purple trim was added to reflect K State pride.
The back of the football includes details about the wheat variety, harvest location, and licensing information. This confirms the trophy’s connection to Kansas research and seed development programs.
This project shows that Kansas wheat is more than a farm crop. It represents research, innovation, farmer decision making, and community pride.
Support for Kansas wheat research is also provided by a dedicated foundation that encourages donations to improve future wheat production. The foundation helps strengthen partnerships between farmers, researchers, and the agricultural industry.
